CSI – cyber crime seminar

Today after so many days i have something to write about. The seminar was conducted by CSI (btw its not “crime scene investigation” but Computer Society of India).

It was five hour long and broken up into 2 sessions.

In first session we were introduced with various aspects of cyber crime and its investigation. Different tools used by hacker to write malicious code. How normal user can be vulnerable online etc.

Second session – In this session were actually shown how scarier computer world can be. To become a computer hacker (read script kiddie) you don’t have to learn half-dozen programming language and understand brick to brick functioning of operating systems. All required resources can be easily obtained from simple Google search. Moreover you don’t even have to have any knowledge about computers to crack some-bodies account password, you just need good communication and manipulating skills.

Some of the topics that were discussed in detail were –

  1. Key loggers
  2. Password cracking
  3. Anonymity of online user
  4. Network Sniffing
  5. Piracy

Of course we were taught, how can we defend ourselves against such attacks. But at the end, its all up to us (as user) how we react at the moment, if we get caught in such situation.

Over all it was a nice event!!

Lately i have been experimenting with some new things like combining c++ dll made with gcc and giving Visual Studio interface to it or making personal audio logs (i always wanted to do this).

Other than this geekiness…

I recently finished a novel called ‘The Thief Lord’. I purchased this novel when i was in 7th or 8th grade, it was my first internet shopping. Now in 3rd year of my B.E., i finally managed to read it. In all these years, i tried to read it twice but only got half-way through (for second time i guess it was one-fourth ) and then i guess ‘much-more-important’ duties/responsibilities came upon me. So i had to abandon it.

The whole story takes place in and around Venice and since i have also been there ages ago, this novel always remained close to my heart.

Right now i am reading Contact by Carl Sagan. Its a sci-fi novel, its about when we human finally receive a message from E.T.I.

If you are from India and want to buy books online then check out these two sites

  1. www.infibeam.com
  2. www.flipkart.com

I personally prefer infibeam.com as they offer more discount than flipkart and plus their service is also good. But if you can’t find the required book on infibeam then try flipkart. And the best part is they both offer free shipping with-in India.

Enjoy reading!!

If you have been using computers (windows) for more than one day and had to use some usb drive. Then I am sure you must have faced this problem of ‘not being able to safely remove USB drive’. And if you are like me who has to do lots of data transfer then this must be a major cause of frustration.

I wonder, if windows can detect that some application is using the drive, then why can’t it handle itself or atleast report us which application is the culprit. But no… windows has its own way irritating us.

In such situation we are left with 2 options :

  • Shutdown the computer, remove the drive and restart the computer.
  • Use brute force i.e. remove the drive forcefully, regardless of windows warning.

Now first option seems safest but its very time consuming. Plus if you think putting computer into hibernation or logging off-on will help, then you are wrong.

And second option is somewhat risky, though i have (may be you too) used it on many occasions when i just can’t stand, rebooting my pc all over again and wait for my programs to reload. This hasn’t cause any major trouble  except some time this can corrupt your drive’s filesystem and then you have to run chkdisk on the drive.

But now you can add a third option to your list.

Following applications will allow you to deal with the problem

  1. Safely Remove (not free)
  2. Unlocker (free)

Besides helping with ejecting drives Unlocker also helps you in deleting some locked files which you never created.

I hope this will reduce the time, you spend swearing and kicking your computer.

Happy Computing.

I had enrolled my self for java workshop which took  my precious last four weekends (sat-sun). I just can’t express how the very thought of coming free (hopefully!!) weekends is filling me with joy…

Nah! I am not complainting after all it was my decision to join the course but nevertheless it ate my four weekends, it could have been on anyother day like workingdays??

Lets talk about actual classes now..

I have to admit these classes were one of the best things that have happened lately, at least for me. They were very helpfull, they just didn’t help us in learning java only but tought us much more than that like – best coding practices, efficient coding style, new way of interpreting given scenario in terms of classes and objects. Actual essense of data hiding, inheritance, encapsulation. Before these classes, though i could define these terms by the book but never understood the underlying meaning of them, they all seemed same to me [ data hiding = encapsulation??]. The very meaning of object oriented was a bit shady. But now i can clearly see the difference. What an eye opener!!!

I really liked, how our instructor use to play small music tracks at the begining of each session. One more thing worth mention is his (instructor’s) way of teaching – just imagine attending a class of single subject for 6 hrs, scary isn’t it? but believe me, when i  say, we never felt bored or tired, thanks to sir’s small but effective stories and jokes..We all were immensely benifited by his industrial experience and feel pity for other who didn’t attend this workshop.

Let me sum it up again – this workshop wasn’t about learning Java language but how to program NICELY.

I am eagerly waiting for more such workshops organised by our college (ofcourse joining them will directly depend on cash in my pocket)

feeling. . sleepy..gotta go now

will be back soon…

any idea??

no-no no … it’s not that …………….  its an unsophisticated, non-wireless, non-ergonomical,non – ps/2 .. and lot of  more non(s) ..  USB KEYBOARD.

You won’t believe me, i must have visited about ten computer shops and not a single one had a decent USB KEYBOARD … now guys i am not asking for anything exotic or mumbo jumbo – just plain old USB keyboard.

way to go pune… yay!!!

will post when i get one and i am enjoying my dual screen computer environment.

UPDATE : Finally got one at the most unlikeliest place a shopping mall – Central

I am back…

I reached the city, early in the morning around 7:00 am. I gotta say there is nothing like  pune’s weather.

Didn’t feeling like going to college on the very first day of my arrival though college has been opened for the last whole week. Spent most of the day at my room, saw horror movie – dark floors and just finished aliens in the attic. It’s a big accomplishment for me to see two movies in a day, as it normally take half or full week for me to watch the movie completely.

New semester starts from tomorrow (for me), i have a lot of plans and things to do. But i will start with paying college fees first thing tomorrow and i think, i will also join java workshop.

um.. that’s all for this post, will soon post about my little game project very soon…

Holidays are over

I just can’t believe how fast holidays have ended. I think, one  more week would have been nice but since i am already joining college 1 week late that makes it.

..um… Spent most of the time at home (like 96%), did some car driving practice (still need to work on clutch driving), and learned opensdl (open simple direct-media layer )

Ever since i started playing video games, i thought of making one but just couldn’t put that into action. Finally this time, i begun with a humble beginning – simple puzzle game. Though i am still learning open sdl but now i have better idea about my game.

will post more about my game development later…

Luv Kush (YAIMAM)

YAIAM – Yet Another Indian Mythology based Animated Movie

Yesterday i attended a seminar organised by RVML Production House making Luv Kush Movie and ARENA (some animation art school) agra.  As i want my career in game development, i thought attending this might be helpful…

While we were waiting in the hall for Art director and Producer to arrive, some teacher from ARENA was trying hard to entertain us.
Soon Art director and Director/Producer joined us and the show begun with ARENA student showing small projects “for which they have worked very hard – day n night”. I don’t have a clue about how can somebody require HARD WORK and lots of days to make such cheap projects.

They showed us claymation, stop motion and finally flip book animation. One can wonder where is the digital animation after all that must be the major part of ARENA course. Their instructor had to explain to the audience in each movie clip – what was going on?…
Now isn’t animation supposed to be self-explanatory or if they were trying to be all mysterious … if that’s the case then let me tell you, that’s not the way, how seminars work.

I had camera on my mobile but i couldn’t snap the crap.

Then they show us their movie trailers – Luv Kush and kept ranting that its the highest/the biggest/the largest budget movie.
Then they played the five tracks from the movie – exclusively for us.

Afterwards there was QA session:
Some of the good queries were
Audience] Why all indian animated movie have to be based on indian mythos?
Answer] Because mythos sells and thats how we can bring audience to the cinemas.

Audience] Where does Indian animation industry stand in today’s world?
Answer] In beginners phase…this is highest budget movie about INR 25 crores

Audience] How did you guys spend that huge amount of money on this project?
Answer] ……

I genuinely hope, their movie works

As for ARENA students god help them  (seriously…How?… lot of hard work and time)

THE END

at home

Cheers everybody

Its so good to be at home. And if you thought you will be be able to escape daily errands then you are very wrong…

I was going to post earlier(about me packing, preparing for the trip to home) but i guess, you were saved from THE TORTURE because wordpress blocked my blog as my blog is known to be able to affect the life of the people in good/BAD ways.

Actually it was due to some fault on their part.

As soon as i found my blog was blocked, i mailed the people and they were prompt in replying – accepting it was their mistake and my blog is as safe and sound as ever.

Will post my little adventures at home (if i have any)

Enjoy holidays
