If you have been using computers (windows) for more than one day and had to use some usb drive. Then I am sure you must have faced this problem of ‘not being able to safely remove USB drive’. And if you are like me who has to do lots of data transfer then this must be a major cause of frustration.

I wonder, if windows can detect that some application is using the drive, then why can’t it handle itself or atleast report us which application is the culprit. But no… windows has its own way irritating us.

In such situation we are left with 2 options :

  • Shutdown the computer, remove the drive and restart the computer.
  • Use brute force i.e. remove the drive forcefully, regardless of windows warning.

Now first option seems safest but its very time consuming. Plus if you think putting computer into hibernation or logging off-on will help, then you are wrong.

And second option is somewhat risky, though i have (may be you too) used it on many occasions when i just can’t stand, rebooting my pc all over again and wait for my programs to reload. This hasn’t cause any major trouble  except some time this can corrupt your drive’s filesystem and then you have to run chkdisk on the drive.

But now you can add a third option to your list.

Following applications will allow you to deal with the problem

  1. Safely Remove (not free)
  2. Unlocker (free)

Besides helping with ejecting drives Unlocker also helps you in deleting some locked files which you never created.

I hope this will reduce the time, you spend swearing and kicking your computer.

Happy Computing.

I had enrolled my self for java workshop which took  my precious last four weekends (sat-sun). I just can’t express how the very thought of coming free (hopefully!!) weekends is filling me with joy…

Nah! I am not complainting after all it was my decision to join the course but nevertheless it ate my four weekends, it could have been on anyother day like workingdays??

Lets talk about actual classes now..

I have to admit these classes were one of the best things that have happened lately, at least for me. They were very helpfull, they just didn’t help us in learning java only but tought us much more than that like – best coding practices, efficient coding style, new way of interpreting given scenario in terms of classes and objects. Actual essense of data hiding, inheritance, encapsulation. Before these classes, though i could define these terms by the book but never understood the underlying meaning of them, they all seemed same to me [ data hiding = encapsulation??]. The very meaning of object oriented was a bit shady. But now i can clearly see the difference. What an eye opener!!!

I really liked, how our instructor use to play small music tracks at the begining of each session. One more thing worth mention is his (instructor’s) way of teaching – just imagine attending a class of single subject for 6 hrs, scary isn’t it? but believe me, when i  say, we never felt bored or tired, thanks to sir’s small but effective stories and jokes..We all were immensely benifited by his industrial experience and feel pity for other who didn’t attend this workshop.

Let me sum it up again – this workshop wasn’t about learning Java language but how to program NICELY.

I am eagerly waiting for more such workshops organised by our college (ofcourse joining them will directly depend on cash in my pocket)

feeling. . sleepy..gotta go now

will be back soon…

any idea??

no-no no … it’s not that …………….  its an unsophisticated, non-wireless, non-ergonomical,non – ps/2 .. and lot of  more non(s) ..  USB KEYBOARD.

You won’t believe me, i must have visited about ten computer shops and not a single one had a decent USB KEYBOARD … now guys i am not asking for anything exotic or mumbo jumbo – just plain old USB keyboard.

way to go pune… yay!!!

will post when i get one and i am enjoying my dual screen computer environment.

UPDATE : Finally got one at the most unlikeliest place a shopping mall – Central

BGI (Borland Graphics Interface) is ancient as is turbo c++ IDE but nevertheless they are still used in our schools and colleges. Plus they do not work in windows environment (support for native DOS has been completely removed in windows vista/7).

But BGI is good for beginners because you don’t have to worry about whole new fancy functions, classes etc.

So few months back i was also searching for alternative to BGI (not supported on windows) and i found

  • open sdl
  • ogre

and some other but they were all very exotic.

So again, i was back on my quest and finally i stumbled upon WinBGI.

WinBGIm is BGI graphics library ported to computer by by Michael Main at the University of Colorado
Boon isn’t it!

Now it was ported to work with MinGW compiler (my favourite) but it may also work with other compilers such as – digital mars, borland compiler 5.5, intel c/c++ compiler etc.

Before i start, i must tell you that this guide is written in accordance with code::blocks IDE (its the best and its free, check out my previous posts). So if you are using some other IDE or none at all (command-line method) – you’ll need to link with the libraries explicitly. For example, to compile a program (“myprog.c“) that uses the BGI graphics, your compile command may look something like:

c:\programs\myprog> gcc myprog.c -lbgi -lgdi32 -luser32

Lets get started:

  1. First download WinBGIm from here
  2. Extract it.
  3. Copy graphics.h and winbgim.h files in include folder of your compiler directory
  4. Copy libbgi.a to lib folder of your compiler directory
  5. In code::blocks open Settings >> Compiler and debugger >>linker settings
  6. click Add button  in link libraries part and browse and select libbgi.a file
  7. In right part (ie. other linker options) paste commands given in read me.txt  (the winBGIm folder you downloaded)
  8. click Ok

Finally, when using BGI, remember that you first have to  use initgraph() before you can use any graphics. The WinBGIm library gives you an alternative as initwindow(). Heres example:

initwindow(x,y) //x and y are the dimensions of the window you want for graphics.

I hope, you found this guide helpful and incase you need my help just leave a message.

Hi! guys

Now i will guide you through the whole process of running turbo c++ in windows vista or windows 7 environment.
Things Required:
1. DosBox 0.73
2. Turbo C++

1. Install Dosbox in default location.
2. Install Turbo C. (default location is C:\TurboC3\)
3. Open folder (default – C:\TurboC3\) where you installed turbo c and create a new folder named TC.
4. Copy all other files and folders into TC folder.
So that now address of tc folder should be c:\TurboC3\TC\
5. Now go to Start>>All Programs>>DOSBox>>Configuration>>Edit configuration.
6. Make following changes in the file.(Use notepad to edit the file,if computer asks for. )

(1) under [sdl]

(Or you can put 640×480,800×600,1024×768)
(For most latest laptops 1280×800 will be best.)

(if it doesn’t work or colors seem messed up, change it to ddraw)

(2) under [autoexec]

(paste following lines)
mount c c:\turboc3
cd \tc

7. Save file.
8. Now launch DOSBox from desktop or start menu and after 3-5 sec delay, hopefully you will see turbo C with eyes and hands intact.
9. Go to Options>>Directories
10. In all four paths replace turboc3 with tc.

Now you are all set to unleash the programming monster in you.

*  Warning  *

@ Don’t use ctrl+f9 to “compile and run” instead use alt+f9 to “complie” and then click run.
in case you do press ctrl+f9, it will close DOSBox.

DOSBox is emulating c:\turboc3\ as C: root, so you will be required to save your programs in a folder inside c:\turboc3\

Make a new folder inside c:\turboc3\
Name it whatever you want and save your programs inside it.

— If you use linux OS even then you can follow above procedure to emulate turbo c through dosbox

Just search for dosbox in repositories.

Code Blocks

I have seen lot of my buddies struggling with initial setup of excellent IDE – code blocks.

I have attached borland’s compiler 5.5 version (borland is the same company, which made Turbo C++)

So here i am posting the complete thing in one package ie. codeblocks.rar

*Extract CodeBlocks.rar

*Copy CodeBlocks  folder in root of c: drive (no other drive)

*So now address of your copied folder must be C:\CodeBlocks\

*Open that folder and double click the shortcut

*Click…                 File->New->File->c\c++ source

*When it asks for – filename with full path, click on […]  button and name your program

*Now  you are set to fire your CPU with programs

Guys i am finally in google wave

Just 10 mins back I got invited to google wave by one of my friend.

Guys i am really excited….

Now i have got some invites, who ever wants it just leave some message below.

Now i am off to wave

c u later is ‘no more’

I don’t know if you guys already know it but i just came to know that is ‘no more’ between us..

I just can’t believe it as i have been using it for past ……….. form the day i learned about torrents. Now its been reduced to mere content distribution service by ‘approved’ publishers.

Here are some facts about (source : Wikipedia)

Launched on 19 January 2005

Statistics as of 24 November 2009:[12]

  • Total torrents in database: 1,316,806
  • Total torrent downloads: 10,062,351,935

Statistics as of 26 November 2009:

  • Total torrents in database: 8,859

As figures suggest even non-copyright was completely deleted.

First torrentspy

now mininova

thepiratebay is already broken

and demonoid is still lost ..

God bless us…

for the time being i think i have found a replacement and that is but it requires registration so watch it.

My new internet connection

Guys after using Hathway internet connection for about two months, its was just unbearable – low speed, moderate customer service and no upload speed!!

After considering whatever options we have in india, I have finally got myself a new internet connection from reliance and i must say, so far (just few hours)its been just unbelievable. I opted for 500kbps connection and so my download are getting downloaded at 52-60KBPs.

Monthly rent will be about 1250 bucks,  no doubt thats slightly high but does it matter when we are getting unlimited download package. You can always change your package online at just few mouse clicks.

Now i am off to enjoy my new net connection.

Note :- 8 k bits per second == 1K byte per second

As all internet connections are advertised as bit per second, so actual download speed is that figure (bit per second) divided by 8. But thats an  ideal case, normally actual speed is slightly lower than that because of noise in wires etc.

So practically whatever internet connection you opt for your actual speed must lie between

(k bits per second)/10  and  (k bits per second)/8.

One more thing, which people are normally confused about is that surfing speed and downloading speed are different.

Now that statement is as true as 2+2=5.

Black Google

If you find it hard to gaze on white screen with black text. Then just try the opposite, ie make background colour darker (if not black) and foreground colour lighter.

For instance you can try this custom google search engine. It is same as google but with darker theme which really light on eyes.

Blackle also mention how much watts of energy has been saved by using it.

Since it uses dark colour for its theme, less number of pixels of your monitor are used and therefore less electrical energy is consumed, moreover it keeps your vision healthy. Otherwise, when we stare at a website like google search page, most of the pixel are lit and it like gazing at a bright light bulb which degrades vision.

Now if you want to try this on larger scale like making all web pages darker

Follow below mention steps (only for firefox users)

  1. go to >>> Tool>Options>Contents
  2. There click on colours button under fonts option.
  3. Select darker colour for background and brighter for font.
  4. Uncheck -> Use system colours and Allow pages to choose their own colour
  5. OK and OK
